FAQ: What 3D printing software to use?
There are two main types of software involved in 3D printing: Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and slicing software.
CAD is used to generate the geometry of an object. Slicing software converts CAD geometry into instructions that a 3D printer can use to build a part. For more information on how these softwares fit into the 3D printing workflow, see our article covering that topic.
For a user with little to no CAD experience, GZERO Additive recommends starting with Ashlar-Vellum Xenon as it is incredibly intuitive and quick to learn. It also includes a very capable feature set at a reasonable price.
For slicing, GZERO Additive recommends using Simplify3D. Simplify3D is a closed-source, American owned and American made software that can be air-gapped for high security installations. Simplify3D also includes email based tech support staffed by knowledgeable engineers with years of 3D printing experience.
